What to Expect During Therapy-

The uncertainty of coming to therapy can make clients feel anxious, so addressing some of that unknown up front is important. Your treatment will be individually tailored to your needs and unique situation, based upon effective research-supported therapies.

You will begin treatment by sharing information about yourself and your life experiences.  From there, your goals for treatment will be discussed. Once goals for therapy have been established you now have a focus and direction for therapy as well as a gauge for your continued progress. Sessions are generally spent discussing what is bothering you, developing skills to cope better, learning to communicate more effectively, considering and implementing solutions, and helping you to feel better about yourself and your situation. It is a collaborative process, you are encouraged to share your concerns, questions, or expectations throughout the journey.

Anxiety & Depression

Each of us has some degree of anxiety or worry in our lives, but at times these anxious thoughts can become overwhelming to the point where they get in the way of us enjoying daily activities ourselves and may hinder our relationships with others. Linda has extensive experience using research based strategies to help you best manage anxious feelings so that you can focus on living your life.  A certified EX/RP Therapist from the University of Penn Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety, Linda is versed in researched based techniques targeting the treatment of anxiety to include OCD.

In comparison, feelings of depression can limit a persons’ ability to engage in activities which once brought joy and happiness.  Common symptoms of depression can include general feelings of unhappiness, a desire to social isolate, changes in eating and or sleeping patterns, feelings of irritability, and difficulties expressing emotional or physical attachment.  Linda uses a client centered approach, meeting the client where they are, and then teaches cognitive behavioral skills to best address depression and the feelings associated with it.

Teen Counseling

Identity formation is the developmental life task facing adolescents. Teens are challenged to balance the formation of self while continuing to follow their parents’ rules. Linda follows a client-centered approach, meeting the teen where they are, and then helps to empower the teen to call on their strengths to develop their own identity. Anxiety, conflict and confusion are inherent in this challenging task as both the teen and the parents will experience the transition.  Successful transitions are best realized when the focus remains on perseverance of the teen/parent relationship and Linda places this goal in the forefront as she aids you in obtaining a healthy transition.

Disordered Eating

Based on the learnings of intuitive eating, mindfulness, self-compassion, and the principles of Health at Every Size (HAES), Linda will work with you to find peace as you feed and nurture your body.  This research based approach aims to grant you permission to live your life fully while positively connecting to both yourself and others. The aim is to help you break the cycle of dieting, learn to eat ‘normally’, and nurture lasting health behaviors without obsessing about food or your body.

  Play Therapy

Play is the language of children and play therapy is a child’s best way to learn about themselves, their emotions and their experiences.  A young child in pretend play can bake cookies, face their fear of scary spiders and practice conflict mediation when they break up a fight between their dolls.  Play offers a safe place where children can practice walking through emotions and daily struggles, without the same level of intensity and fear that presents itself in the real world.  Play therapy also allows children a natural way to develop coping strategies to better manage their emotions, build insight, strengthen confidence and improve their relationships with others.

Parenting Support

Often considered the most important role in your life, being a parent brings with it an array of thoughts feelings and behaviors that ebb and flow throughout the parenthood journey.  Linda is experienced in both New Parent Support (helping you navigating the highs and lows of this major life transition) and Parenting Skills (assistance and support for parents during this rewarding yet sometimes overwhelming time of life).  Linda will help you negotiate topics such as managing the challenge between new and possibly lost identities, exploration of parenting styles, and balancing the many roles of being a parent, while providing a safe and supportive place to express new thoughts, feelings and anxieties that are sometimes difficult to share with family and friends.

Group Work

Inherent in the group process is therapeutic healing which often occurs through the self-awareness that you “are not alone” in your thoughts, feelings and behaviors.   Group therapy allows individuals the opportunity to grow and change by listening to others with similar issues.  Group work provides individuals the space to develop communication skills, give and receive feedback and learn how to express their issues in a safe and nurturing space. Group topics continue to expand and include: Grief and Loss, Social Skills, Kids/teens of Divorced Parents, and Anger Management.

In September 2022, we are starting a Parents Group for parents of anxious children/teenagers. If you are interested in joining us, contact Linda or Lindsay to reserve your spot today!
